Yves St. Laurent: August 1, 1936 - June 1, 2008

French designer Yves St. Laurent has died. The Associated Press reports that Mr. St. Laurent passed away about 45 minutes ago.

An icon of the rich and famous and of the Gay community, Mr. St. Laurent was born in Oran (Wahran), North Africa (where the grandfather of our founding exModian was born) to French parents in what was then the French colony of Algeria. He shot to fame during the early 1960s with his signature style that defined fashion for an entire generation. Prior to launching his own house, Mr. St. Laurent worked for the House of Christian Dior.

Mr. St. Laurent did not publicly acknowledge his homosexuality until 1991.
