No retelling of the roots of house music is ever complete without mentioning a man who today has been elevated to the role of godfather of the genre. That man is Marshall Jefferson.
While New York's infant house scene was dominated by the influence of Larry Levan and the sounds he let loose on the dancefloor of his club, the Paradise Garage, over in Chicago, a different variety had sprung up.
This sound did away with the pretentious horns and strings of the Garage sound. It relagated the vocals to a supporting role, accentuating the drum-driven beat. Even New York was not immune to the infectious sound coming out of Chicago. The Garage sound was a singer's style, the Warehouse sound was a dancer's style. And everybody wanted to dance.
One of house music's enduring classics is what we bring you tonight...Marshall Jefferson's rework of LNR's "Work It To The Bone (Dub Classic Mix)".
Enjoy!
